Getting Started With Pilates, instructor guides student on reformer equipment

How do I get started doing Pilates?

I was recently at a networking event and someone said to me that they had never tried the Pilates machine. That machine is called the reformer and it is a great way to get started with Pilates.

Mat Pilates is one of the hardest forms of Pilates. Whereas reformer Pilates is a little more forgiving and a nice way to develop a mind-body connection because you get feedback from the reformer.

Where should I start Pilates?

The best way to get started is to contact a studio that offers one-on-ones from a certified instructor on the Pilates reformer. The attention you get in a one-on-one when learning how to use the reformer is essential to learning how to execute the Pilates method correctly.

Mastery of Pilates takes years, and starting correctly equips you with the skills to be on the right path. The more you understand how to execute the exercises correctly the more you will get out of it.

What do I need to get started?

Regular workout attire works well for Pilates. Workout shorts, sweatpants or yoga pants are best. Skirts and skorts are discouraged due to the positions of the exercises. Wear layers, so you have options to change your comfort level. Shoes are not part of Pilates so you have the option to use socks, gripper socks, or go barefoot.

You do not have to be completely conditioned, or have experience with Pilates to get started, you just need the ambition to give it a try! Getting started is as easy as contacting the Pilates Loft and scheduling your studio starter.

What times are the studio starters offered?

We are here to help you schedule these at a time that is convenient for you. You don’t need to fit into OUR schedule for a studio starter. We fit into YOUR schedule.

What is the studio starter and how do I get started?

In initial sessions you can expect to learn how to properly breathe to activate muscles that surround the spine (the core). In these sessions we will take you through at least 50 essential level exercises to get you acquainted with the reformer and the Pilates Method.

Many people are ready for group classes following the studio starter, but some people still need some one on one time to safely move into a group setting. Safety is our priority and being ready to get something out of group classes is just as important. We don’t want you to compensate or muscle through the exercises.
