Benefits of Pilates for Golfers
Pilates can improve power, patterns, and posture in your golf game
There is no magic exercise, program, or trainer to make you perfect; however, Pilates will increase your ability for an injury-free golf swing packed with precision and control. Discover Pilates to improve your rotational power, movement patterns, posture, and golf game.
What is Pilates?
Pilates targets the layer of muscle that provides stability and support to those larger muscles that propel you through space. So the result of doing Pilates is a lengthening and strengthening of this support system, resulting in better posture, less pain, and an increase in efficiency of your ability to move no matter what you do. Because Pilates works with this underlying layer of muscle, Pilates exercises can be identified to support you in a specific sport, such as golf.
Golf Swing
A golf swing facilitates a total body muscle recruitment of simultaneous stability and mobility. A proper golf swing will engage your glutes and legs, shoulders and arms, forearms and wrists, external obliques, rectus abdominis, and erector spinae. All these muscles should activate during the rotational pattern of your back swing, forward swing, acceleration, and early and late follow through.
What is dissociation in Pilates? Stabilizing one part of the body while another part moves.
How does Pilates improve your golf game?
Working on the deep intrinsic layer of muscles surrounding your bones, Pilates uses proper breathing to achieve better posture and disassociation: stabilizing one area while the other moves. Out of this process comes a better understanding of how to move from your core while stabilizing your posture, which in turn leads to improvement in stability, strength, flexibility, and balance. These improvements positively affect your golf swing to harness control, precision and power. Once these adjustments in movement are regularly adopted in practice, preventing injury is one of many resulting benefits.
Pro Golfers, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, are known to incorporate Pilates into their life. By incorporating Pilates into YOUR life a couple times a week, your golf game will see longer drives, and better accuracy. It’s golf season in Minnesota, so start out the season by adding Pilates to your game!
