If you’re using a Pilates Reformer, are you doing Pilates?
If you’re using a reformer, is it Pilates? Not always. The reformer can be used for strength training beat-driven workouts, and while these are fun, this is strength training on the reformer, not the Pilates Method on the Reformer. Yet both are great! But why is the definition important? They each have different benefits that really complement one another. Studios should delineate between the formats so that YOU get more out of each class.
About Pilates: Pilates isn’t simply using the Reformer; Pilates is a method guided by principles that teach us how to control our spine, rib cage, pelvis, scapulae, breath and postural framework.
Why don’t studios delineate between formats?
Traditionally, Pilates instructors teach the Pilates Method and fitness instructors teach group fitness. And while there are some exceptions, many Pilates instructors are not group fitness instructors just like many group fitness instructors are not Pilates instructors. If they do cross over AND excel at teaching BOTH disciplines WELL, it is rare.
Pilates vs group fitness, what’s the difference?
The outcomes of group fitness and Pilates are different. Group fitness moves to beat driven music, works up a sweat, and gets your body in motion. Using familiar body moves like squats and lunges and planks of course strength can be gained, calories burned and sweat produced.
Pilates is different. It is low impact, and yes it can be in a group setting, but it is a METHOD of exercises based on control designed to enhance muscular endurance and structural balance that strengthens the body’s framework to improve posture, daily activities or athletic performance. It is not a beat-driven workout, the breath is what drives the Pilates Method correctly. If your body’s framework and posture is stronger, then everything else you do is better. If Pilates is done correctly, it will benefit your strength training because you are developing your deep intrinsic muscles that strength training doesn’t always do.
Finally a place with Pilates Method on the reformer AND strength training on the reformer.
The trainers at the Pilates Loft understand how the Pilates Method complements everything else that you do. At the Pilates Loft we have that rare combination in our staff where we are both Certified Group Fitness Instructors and Certified STOTT PILATES® trainers. We teach BOTH formats here. Strength Reformer uses Pilates principles on the reformer to help you get more out of your strength class. It is music driven and seamlessly flows from one exercise to the next working the muscles to fatigue. It’s a fun strength workout that requires endurance and control. The more you incorporate your Pilates principles, the better the outcome! Pilates Reformer is tried and true Pilates repertoire. This format is driven by the Pilates breath. Use the Pilates Reformer class to make everything else better.
Come see how Pilates Reformer and Strength Reformer can benefit you. You might be pleasantly surprised how good you feel.
