Pilates: Frequency and Results
At Pilates Loft, we’re asked many questions about the process, benefits and more, especially as new participants sign up. One of the most common topics is frequency and results. Clients want to know when they’ll start feeling and seeing the benefits.
How many times a week should I do Pilates?
Approach things in moderation, and consistency is key. Pilates is just like any other form of movement. Commitment to consistency will lead to the desired results. Just like all forms of exercise, once a week is not nearly enough to develop habitual patterns in the body to see change.
We can work out for one hour a week and for that one hour we are solely focused on reminding our body what we need to do. There are 167 hours left in the week that you might not be reminding your body what you’re asking it to do, and this is trouble for the human body. Just like we try to develop good habits, the body is also really good at remembering bad habits.
So when it comes to Pilates, consistency should always be your goal. Two to three times a week is what we typically recommend to start to see changes in your posture, changes in your comfort level, and changes in your strength and flexibility. It is a lifestyle choice to be committed to, and the results will show if you do commit.
How long does it take to see results?
If you’re consistent, on average in about three months time you will feel a significant difference. Everyone is different. If you’re working with limitations from the start, it may take longer for you to see results than for someone with fewer or no limitations.
What if I take time off and come back?
This is the beauty about Pilates. The principles that you’ll learn with a skilled instructor will give you things that you can work on when you’re not just doing Pilates.
One of my clients recently told me “I do Pilates so I can do everything else.”
And she’s not wrong. There are postural strategies that you will learn that you can use when playing baseball, pickleball, lifting weights, doing manual labor, or simply sitting at a desk. If you take time away, when you get back on the reformer there will always be a period of building back your base, but when you are consistent outside the studio, it’s a little bit easier to return.
Consistency in and out of the studio is the key.
