Pilates Reformer Training & Safety
I am a certified Pilates instructor and certified group fitness instructor. Watching all these general fitness classes pop up on reformers is a little bit different, but I don’t think it’s taboo. I think Pilates and strength training complement one another quite nicely. I’ve taken workshops over the years that introduce these types of athletic reformer exercises.
In an article about the explosion of reformer it was noted:
“Reformer pilates has become extremely popular over the last few years,” she said. “However, it is important that the growth of reformer pilates goes hand in hand with the safety of those taking part.
“Studios should not cut corners when it comes to training…”
The reformer serves as a fantastic apparatus to engage deep intrinsic muscles of your skeleton. In other words, it strengthens your framework to make everything else you do better.
When beginning any kind of reformer workout, I encourage everyone—from beginners to elite athletes—to find a Pilates studio with certified Pilates instructors where you can do a few one-on-ones, learn what your posture is doing, and then learn how to apply the Pilates principles to your movement patterns. Taking this extra step will make you comfortable on the reformer. But mostly, this is best way to get the most out of any reformer workout you do, be it strength on the reformer or Pilates on the reformer.
Begin correctly and you will move correctly.
We do both formats at the Pilates Loft: Pilates Reformer AND Strength Reformer. Everyone starts with a studio starter (three one on ones) so you can safely and effectively take classes and get the most out of it.
