The Value of a Good Pilates Certification

Pilates Instructor Education that benefits you, as a student or instructor, at any level or need.

I was online the other day and I saw an ad that read “Complete Pilates certification for $59.” And I thought to myself what in the world is happening to Pilates? Is it getting watered down because of popularity? Or is training just getting less intensive? Or is this just a scam? The market is flooded with franchises of Pilates Studios that are drifting further away from teaching Pilates well. Can real client issues be addressed with a $59 training? Given my experience in the industry I can confidently say no.

Pilates Training vs Pilates Certification

Many studios offer their own independent training, but actually lack certification.

So what’s the difference?

Studio-Specific Pilates Training

Teacher training at a specific studio is a way for studios to offer trainings in hope of attracting new employees. These trainings lack the time learning, depth of knowledge covered, and hands on practical work that goes into becoming a Pilates instructor.

You can be Pilates-trained and know some exercises and maybe be able to cue people into those exercises, but what happens when a professional athlete comes in and wants to improve his game? Or when someone comes in who’s had knee, hip or shoulder replacement and is having joint mobility problems? What if they have spondylolisthesis? What if they have scoliosis? What if they are missing a limb?

Or more commonly, what happens when someone is doing an exercise and it’s causing them pain? What are the modifications? What is the source of the pain? Many of these trainings fall short of the true meaning of Pilates and end up offering watered-down group fitness classes.

Pilates Certification

A Certified Pilates Instructor has gone through training that allows them to work with all sorts of populations across the globe, in any kind of studio environment, whether in groups or one-on-one.
